Job summary
Do you want to work in an organisation that values you as an individual? In a team that provides multi-disciplinary support, encourages your development and values your contribution? Then University Hospitals of Leicester is the organisation for you.
Successful candidates will be provided with support from our recruitment and retention team with orientation to all clinical areas with the option of core positions following completion of the preceptorship package.
Band 5 newly qualified midwives will benefit from our extensive preceptorship programme, in line with the National Preceptorship Framework standards (2023) providing a firm foundation in starting your journey into midwifery. Preceptorship programmes can be personalised to suit individuals needs and wishes to incorporate rotations between the hospital and community.
Full and part time hours are available and we actively promote flexible working hours to enable you to balance your work and home life.
Main duties of the job
We would love for you to join our team where you will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team in an environment that is supportive and empowering. You will be expected to fulfil the role of a midwife defined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council upholding high standards of quality evidence based care.
You will work autonomously alongside the multi-disciplinary team to plan, implement and review ongoing holistic care to women in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods.
You will need skills of prioritisation, knowledge of local guidelines and policies to inform your practice, be flexible, adaptable and advocate for women, birthing people and families to ensure safe and effective care is provided.
Leicester maternity services provide safe, high quality care and encourage innovation and development from all staff. We pride ourselves on staff engagement and actively encourage a safe working environment where staff feel safe to speak up and raise concerns.
About us
Our new strategy, developed with the support and feedback of colleagues, patients, and partners, is our compass for the next seven years (2023-2030).
We have four primary goals:
- high-quality care for all,
- being a great place to work,
- partnerships for impact, and
- research and education excellence
And we will embed health equality in all we do - taking active steps to reduce the avoidable differences in healthcare that some people face, working in partnership with communities.
Our strategy is underpinned by new values and we will work to ensure they are an everyday reality for all:
- we are compassionate,
- we are proud,
- we are inclusive, and
- we are one team
This is an exciting moment as we look to the future with clarity on what we already do well and where we need to focus our energies to make an even bigger difference for the people we serve.

We are looking for an experienced and enthusiastic Operations Manager to provide operational leadership across Oncology, Haematology and Rheumatology, working across both George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust (GEH) and South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust (SWFT).
This is a genuinely cross-organisational role, with the postholder's time split between GEH and SWFT. You will be expected to have a visible presence across both organisations, working closely with clinical, nursing and operational colleagues to support the day-to-day delivery and continued development of these services.
Main duties of the job
- This is a cross-organisational role and the postholder's working time will be split between George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust and South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust. The ability to travel independently between the two organisations and their associated sites is therefore an essential requirement of the role.
- Reporting to the General Manager and/or Directorate Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day operational management of Oncology, Haematology and Rheumatology, ensuring services are safe, effective and responsive to the needs of our patients.
- The role requires someone who enjoys being close to operational delivery. You will provide visible leadership across your services and act as a key point of escalation where there are pressures or deviations against performance, quality or financial plans.
- You will work alongside clinical and nursing leaders and Service Managers to understand performance, identify pressures and ensure that appropriate actions and mitigations are in place.
- Alongside the day-to-day operational responsibilities, we want the successful candidate to have a real interest in service improvement and transformation.
- You will support and lead service redesign within your portfolio, working with multidisciplinary teams to implement changes that respond to national and local priorities and improve patient care.
- The successful candidate will also join the On Call Manager Rota for the George Eliot Hospital Site.

Job description
Job responsibilities
- Working across two organisations provides an opportunity to look at how services currently operate at GEH and SWFT, understand where there are differences and identify where greater collaboration, standardisation or sharing of good practice could improve patient care, experience and operational resilience.
- We are looking for someone who can combine strong operational management with a positive and collaborative leadership style.
- You will need to be comfortable working across different teams and sites, developing relationships with a wide range of clinical and non-clinical colleagues and maintaining a clear focus on delivery.
The successful candidate will have:
- Proven experience of managing and improving healthcare services, including experience of managing teams across multiple sites.
- Strong operational and performance management skills, with the ability to use data to understand issues and drive improvement.
- Experience of financial and budget management and an understanding of how operational decisions affect the financial sustainability of services.
- The ability to develop strong working relationships with clinical, nursing and operational colleagues.
- Experience of managing change and delivering service improvement.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills and the confidence to make decisions and escalate issues appropriately.

Leadership, quality and improvement
- You will provide leadership and direction to the teams within your portfolio, supporting workforce planning and ensuring that our people and resources are used effectively.
- You will work closely with clinical teams on workforce and consultant job planning and help create an environment where staff are engaged in how their services are managed and developed. A commitment to equality, inclusion and staff engagement will be an important part of how you lead.
- Quality and patient safety will be central to the role. You will support robust governance arrangements across your services, monitor risks and health and safety, manage complaints and learning, and use local and national benchmarking to identify opportunities for improvement.

Why join us?

Urgent Primary Care Doctor Bank (Home Visiting)
Bring urgent primary care to the patients who need it most - in their own homes.
Urgent care is General Practice at its most immediate.
Patients don't always know what they need when they reach us. They may have been referred through NHS 111 and, following clinical assessment, need to be seen in their own home.
What they need is an experienced doctor who can listen, assess, make confident clinical decisions and get them to the right care.
At IC24, we're looking for Urgent Primary Care Doctors to work within our Home Visiting Service across Sussex, providing urgent face-to-face care to patients in their own homes. You will have access to IC24s fleet of vehicles and any equipment required to carry out this role, we only need you to bring your clinical expertise.
You'll work alongside our drivers, dispatch teams and wider urgent care colleagues, providing safe, timely and effective care while helping patients access the most appropriate treatment for their needs.
If you enjoy the variety of General Practice, the autonomy of home visiting and the clinical challenge of assessing and treating patients in their own environment, this could be the role for you.
What you'll focus on
Assessing and treating patients who need urgent care
You'll provide face-to-face assessment, diagnosis and treatment for patients who have been clinically triaged as requiring a home visit.
Patients may be housebound, approaching the end of their life or have an urgent clinical need that means being assessed in their own home is the most appropriate option.
You'll assess what's happening, decide what needs to happen next and ensure patients receive appropriate treatment, referral and safety-netting.
Making confident clinical decisions
Home visiting requires sound clinical judgement.
You'll often be working with patients you haven't met before, sometimes with limited background information and sometimes when they're anxious, unwell or experiencing difficult circumstances.
You'll need to be able to assess risk, manage uncertainty and make safe decisions independently, recognising when a patient can be treated and supported at home and when they need escalation or an alternative care setting.
Delivering care in patients' homes
This role takes urgent primary care beyond the traditional consulting room.
You'll travel to patients across Sussex, with visits allocated through our IC24 dispatch systems.
You'll assess, diagnose, treat and prescribe appropriately, managing a broad range of urgent primary care presentations and providing compassionate care to patients, relatives and carers.
This can include supporting patients who are frail, housebound or receiving palliative and end-of-life care.
Working as one multidisciplinary team
Good urgent care depends on people working well together.
You'll work closely with IC24 drivers and dispatch teams, as well as colleagues across NHS 111, community nursing, pharmacy, paramedic services and primary care.
You'll communicate clearly, share clinical information and work collaboratively to make sure patients receive joined-up care.
Providing the right care in the right place
Not every patient who needs urgent care needs to be in an Emergency Department.
Where clinically appropriate, you'll help patients remain safely in their own homes by putting the right treatment, advice, referrals and safety-netting in place.
You'll liaise with community and primary care services to support continuity of care and recognise when a patient needs escalation to another service or hospital.
Whether you're treating a patient at home, referring them to another service or escalating their care, the patient and their safety will be at the centre of your decision-making.
Maintaining excellent clinical standards
You'll work within IC24's clinical governance framework and prescribing formulary, maintaining accurate and timely clinical records and working in accordance with GMC guidance and relevant national and local clinical standards.
You'll maintain your CPD and essential learning and have opportunities to contribute to audit, learning events, education and quality improvement.
This is urgent care and variety comes with it
No two sessions will necessarily look the same.
You'll see patients across ages and backgrounds, presenting with everything from relatively straightforward acute illness to complex physical, mental health or social circumstances.
Some sessions will be busy. Priorities can change quickly. You'll sometimes need to make important clinical decisions with limited information, working independently in a patient's home while remaining connected to the wider IC24 team.
You'll probably thrive here if you:
- Enjoy the variety and unpredictability of urgent care
- Are confident assessing undifferentiated patients
- Can make sound clinical decisions independently
- Are comfortable managing risk and uncertainty
- Have strong face-to-face consultation and home visiting skills
- Communicate clearly and compassionately with patients, relatives and carers
- Are comfortable supporting frail, palliative and end-of-life patients
- Can adapt when service demands change unexpectedly
- Are comfortable working independently while knowing when to seek support
If you prefer a predictable caseload and a fixed clinical environment, home visiting may not be the right fit.
But if you enjoy thinking on your feet, value clinical autonomy and get satisfaction from helping patients receive the care they need in their own homes, we'd like to hear from you.
What you'll bring
You'll:
- Hold current GMC registration
- Be an MRCGP Graduate
- Have relevant clinical experience within areas such as Primary Care, Emergency Medicine, A&E or previous Out of Hours experience
- Have experience of face-to-face clinical consultation
- Have experience of primary care home visiting
- Hold a full clean UK Driving License
- Be comfortable driving both automatic and manual vehicles
The environment you'll work in
Urgent care operates around the needs of our patients, so flexibility is an important part of this role.
You'll work across our Home Visiting Service, travelling to patients in their own homes across Sussex.
You'll work alongside IC24 drivers and dispatch teams, with visits allocated through our dispatch systems using CLEO on Toughbook devices and laptops.
